About the farmer

The Dukunde Kawa cooperative supports its members in adopting sustainable farming practices, notably through reforestation and the systematic planting of shade trees. When a grower receives a coffee seedling, they also receive a shade tree. At the washing stations, the water used for coffee processing is reused to reduce the environmental impact.

The cooperative has developed various social and economic projects through Fairtrade premiums. These include the establishment of a farmer savings account, providing producers access to small loans at low interest rates, as well as agronomic training and access to health insurance.

The cooperative also launched the Musasa Milk project, aimed at diversifying producers' income. Cows are allocated to members, providing natural fertilisers for the fields and allowing milk to be sold back to the cooperative, where it is locally processed into yoghurt and other dairy products.
